June 21 – Sermon – Psalm 46

Psalm 46 – A cosmic call to (in)action

Psalm 46 is only 11 verses long, but it does so much. It can fairly easily be broken down in 4 themes:

Theme 1 – God, the Almighty is with us, protecting us and fighting for us now (verses 1, 7 and 11);

Theme 2 – God controls the earth and everything and everyone in it (verse 2, 3, 6, 8, and 9);

Theme 3 – BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD – God has a desire for us to know Him, His works and all people right NOW (verse 10);

Theme 4 – God refreshes and cares for His Holy City (verse 4, 5) (we are not going to look at this part of the Psalm in any detail but suffice it to say that His Holy City is grand, well stocked with peace, safety and abundance and if you really would like to know more about the City and the River of Life running through it, take a quick look at Revelation 22:1-2)

But I am going to focus this morning on these first three themes – God’s almighty fighting power; God’s control; and God’s desire for us to know Him.
